The installation for the latest Ubuntu version 7.04 “Feisty Fawn” went well on my Thinkpad T60p, both times. I first did an upgrade and, when I had the problems described below, I did a fresh install. I wasn’t concerned about doing a full install since I didn’t have much in the way of customizations.
The problem comes about when starting SL. I get through the login page, past the Precaching and then crash – segmentation fault. The machine does not lock up, but neither can I get further. I tried all the troubleshooting tricks in the readme file, but to no avail. This is with the non-open ATI drivers. Without them, I couldn’t even get this far. I haven’t found anything in the various forums that help, and I’ve turned off audio. A quick look at the stack log shows that’s it’s dying in an OpenGL call, so it is a basic graphics problem. Sigh.
Oddly enough, the previous version of Ubuntu used to work with SL before I updated the drivers. That’s another reason why I was willing to try the fresh install. The SL linux port is labeled as “alpha,” which I knew, but not getting it to work at all is frustrating. I’ll probably try the update on another machine which is using nVidia drivers. I’m guessing that will work, but then I’m an optimist.
Update: An IBM colleague has suggested a solution.
