New blog category design

Print Friendly

Now that WordPress 2.3 supports tags as well as categories, I’m going to significantly reduce the number of categories that I use and then add tags to my entries. This will take some time, because there are now over 1900 entries in this blog.

My scheme for coming up with the new categories has two components. First, they must be high level names that describe the major topics of which I speak here. Second, there must be enough categories so that it is reasonable to look in one and not have thousands of posts, and there must not be so many of them that they replace the value of having possibly hundreds of tags. Any given post might be in a couple of categories, possibly three.

This is what I came up with for the new planned categories:

  • Bob Dylan
  • Books
  • Document Formats
  • Education
  • Family
  • Games
  • Hardware
  • Home
  • Language
  • Music
  • News
  • Open Source
  • Politics
  • Programming
  • Science
  • Software
  • Sports
  • Standards
  • Travel
  • Virtual Worlds
  • Web 2.0

What do you think? Anything I missed? Anything that really should be combined?

  1. I love your blog… it’s in my RSS reader. I have to say though, that when I saw this list what popped into my mind was: “One of these things, is not like the others…” – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tZIvgQ9ik48

    I’ll give you a hint… it’s a singer! :-)

    Keep up the good work!

  2. What about category ‘rants’ ;)

  3. Of Course Bob should have a category to himself.
    How could it be otherwise?
    ;-)

  4. How about “Bugs and site issues”? We had quite a few of these lately.

  5. Good call. I added a Site Issues Blog and Website category. I’m tweaking the list here and there in other ways as well.
