The village government where I live is responsible for the care of the trees in the boulevard out front, the grassy area between the sidewalk and the street. It’s a tough life for a tree, especially given the salt they put on the road in the snow months between November and March.
The photo shows one of the oldest maple trees being taken down this morning because it was nearly dead and hence a hazard should it fall on the road. In the Spring the village will plant a new one, perhaps one that is more salt resistant. In the meanwhile, there will be a hole in our southern skyline.
