Sun, Java, GPL

I’m glad this finally got done. To Sun: keep pushing, finish the job, and don’t forget the Apache Harmony project. To you internal Sun people who worked so hard to make this happen: congratulations and thanks for your perseverance! To all the hundreds of non-Sun software developers who have contributed code to Java in the last decade, congratulations, you can now claim you are open source programmers (time to update that resume)!

A question: any idea whether OpenSolaris will be moved to GPL as well so that it can be better mixed with Linux?

  1. scot says:

which license do you consider most freeing to the community apache or GPL ?

  2. Bob Sutor says:

In this instance, dual licensing under both would have been fine. We, of course, do a lot under each.

  3. Simon Phipps says:

Thanks, Bob. We’ve not forgotten Apache – in fact, Geir was at the launch event as our special guest.

At the end of the event, Jonathan Schwartz asked Rich Green exactly that question about OpenSolaris and Rich said he’d look into it, so who knows what will happen!
