There’s some sad news this morning from the world of music: James Brown, the “Godfather of Soul,” died early this morning, according to a story in the New York Times. As the article points out, Brown was one of the major musical figures in the last 50 years.
I never got a chance to see Brown perform live, but several years ago we were in the Rome airport, returning from a family vacation, and there was a commotion behind us in the security line. We turned, and there was Brown being escorted around the line by some policemen and his entourage. We just stood there gaping, but one rather forward woman walked up to him and gave him a big hug, which he gladly accepted. So that’s our little connection to this musical icon, may he rest in peace.
