So, ‘mp3′ has a new inventor today http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/6388273.stm . And it’s AT&T, who IBM has crossed swords with before. (They bought IBM’s global network, for roughly enough money to let IBM buy Lotus. Also the little thing about Unix and AIX.)
What we don’t know is whether they are like Adobe http://www.adobe.com/aboutadobe/pressroom/pressreleases/200701/012907OpenPDFAIIM.html and Sun http://about.openoffice.org/index.html — in which case you’ll be able to play ‘mp3′s on your Ubuntu box without a care in the world. Or whether they are like the previous inventors of ‘mp3′ http://mp3licensing.com/royalty/ , in which case you’ll have to pay 75 cents per box with a $15,000 minimum.
Is the world opening, or closing ?
