If Microsoft want Silverlight to be viable, they should make a version for Linux and either start selling it or giving it away (their choice).
There are people and businesses who might be willing to ‘buy its freedom’ … not me personally, all my spare funds go to buying food for the kids … but Mark Shuttleworth (who might want it for Ubuntu), AT&T (who might want it to drive broadband uptake), and IBM (who might want it to facilitate commercial content hosting on ‘big iron’) spring to mind as possibilities.
Otherwise it’s http://www.xiph.org/ open-source codecs and Adobe Flex all the way.
