I don’t think anyone needs to make a deal with IBM if they want to distribute and support IBM Websphere Community Edition http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/downloads/ws/wasce/ .
As far as I can tell, the deal is ‘take, use, modify, redistribute it with or without source, for a fee or for no fee, just don’t sue IBM for patent infringement’.
Of course, if you’d like a commercial warranty contract, or development or operational services for it, or hardware to run it on, your IBM salesman is waiting to take your call. If we can agree on a price, we will sell.
And if you go collaborating with others to develop something based around it, we are watching to see what grows.
Websphere is a textbook. Websphere Community Edition is an exercise book. Please take as many exercise books as you wish, write something in them, learn.
By all accounts there are a million WAS/CE ‘seeds’ scattered around the planet. Some of them must surely fall into fertile soil and start to grow. We’ll think about how to harvest the resulting crop in a few years’ time.
