From ZDNet Asia “Malaysia formally embraces open doc format”:
“These discussions centered on open formats, particularly as they relate to office documents, their importance for the current and future accessibility of government records, and the relative ‘openness’ of the format options available to us,” Nor Aliah explained.
The study will document the benefits of open standards, suggest policies and guidelines for achieving openness and provide a roadmap for implementing the ODF in Malaysia’ public sector, added MOSSA.
Congratulations to everyone in Malaysia who worked on this. This is historic. This is progress.
I believe we’re moving inexorably toward open standards becoming the preferred way to implement true interoperability, versus methods that superficially sound good but are really just lock-in strategies in disguise.

Bob,
Don’t pop the champagne yet!
I am sure we (I am Malaysian) will make OOXML a SIRIM standard as well when and if it made it to ISO.
Well, there’s a long time until that happens, if ever! Are you really going to make me wait for that champagne? (grin)
I was delighted to hear this news. There is a nice Wikipedia article on OpenDocument adoption and I assume you guys have seen it already.
