  • I really like Lotus Symphony. Been using it a couple of days now and there are distinct differences between it and OpenOffice. As you say, it’s just one more choice with which to access my ODF files, and a suite I’m going to enjoy.

It was ‘parting of the ways’ today at IBM Hursley. My summer Intern left to go back to Warwick University http://www2.warwick.ac.uk/ .

I made sure he had a copy of http://symphony.lotus.com/ to take away; if Sam P is going to engage in ‘open commercial warfare’, then I presume he wants his foot-soldiers to follow through. I can distribute the one; Sam can distribute the hundred million. If he thinks it best.

My Intern said something quite interesting as he left. “Each academic year, when the students get back, the network is toasted for a couple of weeks”. We think this is due to the students’ computers giving each other all the viruses they have picked up over the summer. The same happens with people, and cold viruses.

He’s a molecular chemist, not a computer engineer. We were doing some interdisciplinary work, trying to get this thing http://domino.research.ibm.com/comm/research_projects.nsf/pages/bluegene.index.html into a state where it could help accelerate the time-to-market for Big Pharma and new pharmaceuticals. Really, it needs to come out of the IBM Research labs and go into AstraZeneca’s labs. Or another Big Pharma. We can build more, we can satisfy demand.

Software is of no value until it’s deployed, delivering solutions to clients.

    We’re pushing very hard.

Lotus Notes http://www-306.ibm.com/software/lotus/notesanddomino/ . Take back control !
