The Open Malaysia blog is reporting the following:
The Malaysian Administrative Modernization and Management Planning Unit (MAMPU) has announced that the agency will be migrating to OpenOffice.org office suite as well as adopt the OpenDocument Format (ODF). In addition, Microsoft Office is to be phased out by end of 2008.

It’s like switching from IBM-standard punch-cards to American Standard Code paper-tape.
Or VHS videotape to ISO DVD.
Proprietary standards eventually fall to open standards. We lose some, we win some, but it has to happen. There’s an inevitability about the direction.
Progress. Sooner is better.
Well done, Malaysia.
